Lovable vs Codex
Lovable writes the app for you in the browser and also hosts it. Codex is OpenAI's coding agent. You give it a task in the Codex app or the terminal, and it changes the code in a folder on your computer.
Lovable and Codex side by side
| Lovable | Codex | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | An app builder in the browser | A coding agent from OpenAI |
| Where it runs | In the browser | The Codex app, the terminal or your code editor |
| Where the code lives | In Lovable, synced to GitHub | In a folder on your computer and in your GitHub repo |
| Hosting | Included, at a lovable.app address | Not included. You pick a host |
| Backend | Lovable Cloud (built on Supabase) or your own Supabase | None. You keep the backend you have |
| Notes for the AI | Project knowledge in the settings, or AGENTS.md in the repo | AGENTS.md |
| Price | Free plan with daily credits. Pro $25 a month, or $21 billed yearly | Included in every ChatGPT plan, also the free one. Plus is $20 a month. Or an OpenAI API key |
Prices checked on 15 October 2026. Both change often, so check the pricing pages before you decide.
Credits or ChatGPT limits: what do you pay for?
Lovable counts credits. Every message to the agent costs credits, and so do hosting, the backend and AI features inside your app. Pro starts at $25 a month for 100 credits, plus 5 credits a day. 50 more credits cost $15.
Codex uses the limits of your ChatGPT plan. On Plus they count per five hours, and weekly limits can apply too. When you hit a limit, Codex finishes the task it is working on. Then you wait, buy more credits or switch to an OpenAI API key and pay per use.
What you give up with Codex
- Hosting. Lovable publishes the app with one click. With Codex you deploy it yourself.
- A preview that just works. The Codex app has a browser where you click on a page and comment on it, but you start the app on your computer first.
- Lovable Cloud, if you leave Lovable completely. The backend then moves to your own Supabase project.
What Codex gives you
- An agent that works on its own in your project folder. It edits files and runs commands there, and asks before it goes outside the project or uses the network.
- No new subscription if you already use ChatGPT. Codex is part of every ChatGPT plan, the free one too (checked on 15 October 2026).
- Tasks that run without your computer. Codex cloud works on your GitHub repository on OpenAI computers, even while your laptop is closed.
- Any editor and any host. The project is a normal folder with a normal Git repository.
Can a team work on it together with Codex?
In Lovable, yes, in the same project at the same time. Everyone sees changes as they happen, and each person can also work in a draft first. Members use the credits of the workspace owner.
With Codex each person works on their own copy of the code and shares changes through GitHub. Notes for the agent go in an AGENTS.md file in the repository, so everyone gets the same ones. ChatGPT Business costs $25 per person a month, or $20 billed yearly, for at least 2 people. It adds a shared workspace and admin controls.
Lovable or Codex: which one fits you?
- Stay on Lovable if you do not want to touch code, you want hosting included and the app still changes every day.
- Pick Codex if you already pay for ChatGPT, you are fine with checking the work of an agent or you want the app on your own host.
Keep Lovable and Codex on the same code
Lovable syncs with GitHub both ways, so Codex can work on the same repository. Pull before you start, push when you finish and do not edit in both at once.
When and how to move to Codex
Move when the Lovable editor cannot make a change you need or the credits cost more than the result is worth. Connect the project to GitHub, get the repository onto your computer and open it in Codex. The step-by-step guide asks a few questions about your app and shows only the steps you need.
