What the free Replit plan stops you from doing

We built a test app on the free Replit Starter plan in November 2026. The Agent stopped before we were done, and the published app came with an end date. This is what we saw and what you can still do without paying.

What you get for free

The Agent quota is monthly

On the first day the Agent stopped after less than two minutes of work and worked again the next day. On the second day it built most of a small project board in about 10 minutes. Then it wrote: "You've reached your monthly free quota limit. It will reset on December 3, 2026." The sidebar showed Free allowance at 100% used.

After that every message to the Agent opens "Keep using Replit? You've reached your Starter limit. Upgrade to continue." The code the Agent wrote stays in the project.

What still works

Git pane: create a repository and pushWorks

Publishing: Publish and RepublishWorks

So you can still get the code out. Push it to GitHub from the Git pane and go on with an AI tool on your computer. Claude Code and Codex both read the Replit project fine in our test.

A free published app expires

Right after the first publish, Publishing said: "Your published app will expire in 29 days. Upgrade to keep your published app running." The window after publishing also says that free deployments are temporary. Starter apps carry a "Made with Replit" badge.

The first publish also creates the production database from the data in the development one. Before that the Database tool shows only Development Database. The production database of our free app had 1 GB of storage.

Pause or Unpublish

Both are in Publishing, under Adjust settings, Manage your app. Pause keeps the app and the billing: "Your billing will continue, but all users will lose access to your app." Unpublish ends the billing, and the published app "will cease to exist".

When the limit is the reason to move

The quota limits the Agent, not your app. An AI tool on your computer can make the same edits on the same repository, and the app can run on your own server or on Vercel. The step-by-step guides for Replit cover the move, including the database, the logins and the files.
