Does Bolt use Supabase? Bolt Cloud or your own project
It depends on the project. New Bolt projects keep their data in Bolt Database, part of Bolt Cloud. On Pro and Teams plans you can pick Supabase instead, but only when you start a new project. Which one your app has decides what you can take with you.
What Bolt Cloud has
- Database: your tables, with an export of the row data.
- Authentication: sign-in with email and Google, password reset and email templates.
- User management: the people who signed up, plus invites.
- File storage: buckets, public or private.
- Server functions, Secrets and Logs.
- Advanced settings: restart the database, connect to Supabase instead or claim the database into your own Supabase account.
Bolt Cloud or Supabase side by side
| Bolt Cloud | Your own Supabase project | |
|---|---|---|
| Who runs it | Bolt | Supabase, in your own account |
| How you get it | The default for new projects | On Pro or Teams, when you create the project |
| Where you open it | In the project in Bolt | At supabase.com |
| Move it later | No supported way to move it to Supabase | It is already yours |
Which one does your app use?
Open the project in Bolt. A project on Bolt Cloud shows its database, users and files in the Cloud settings. A project on your own Supabase project opens in your Supabase dashboard, and the address in its .env file is one you can open there.
In a Bolt Cloud project the .env file holds VITE_SUPABASE_URL and VITE_SUPABASE_ANON_KEY, both marked with a lock and both safe to show in a browser. Bolt does not push this file to GitHub.
What about claiming the database?
The Advanced settings of Bolt Cloud list an option to claim your database into your own Supabase account. Bolt does not explain it in its docs yet. Ask Bolt support before you plan a move around it.
What it means for a move
The backend does not have to move. An app on Vercel or on your own server can keep using Bolt Cloud or your Supabase project. You add the address and the public key on the new host and change the login address to the new one.
Before you change anything, export the row data of each table in the Bolt Cloud database as a backup.
